June 19th, 2015 · No Comments

Spring and summer storms are in full swing up and down the East Coast. While it’s important to protect your home and belongings from these storms, ServiceMaster Metropolitan wants to make sure you keep yourself safe as well. During thunderstorms, lightning is a real hazard that shouldn’t be taken lightly. The National Weather Service has provided some tips on how to stay safe in conditions where lightning is present.

Here are some lightning safety tips when you’re outdoors:

  • Seek shelter immediately if possible.
  • Evacuate from elevated areas such as hills, peaks, mountain ridges, etc.
  • Do not lie flat on the ground.
  • Do not seek shelter under an isolated tree.
  • Refrain from using cliffs or overhangs for shelter, as they can be lightning conductors.
  • Get out and away from bodies of water such as ponds and lakes.
  • Stay clear of structures and objects that conduct electricity. This includes barbed wire fences, windmills, and power lines.

Lightning can still be hazardous even when you are indoors if a lightning strike hits a telephone line or antenna and isn’t deflected through some sort of grounding agent. Here are some lightning safety tips when you’re indoors:

  • Try to stay off of corded phones, computers, and other equipment that has direct contact with electricity.
  • Avoid indoor water channels such as plumbing, sinks, baths, and faucets.
  • Keep away from windows, doors, and porches
  • Do not lie down on or against concrete surfaces

During a storm, your safety comes first. Make sure that you are taking the necessary precautions when lightning is in your area.
