How to Keep Your Phone and Other Electronics Free of Water Damage in Livingston, NJ

June 24th, 2015 · No Comments

Getting your phone or computer wet can be frustrating and scary. There is always that initial panic of lost data and the dread that you’ve lost something essential to your daily activities. Whether your phone is dropped in the sink or you’ve spilled a beverage on your laptop, the next steps you take are crucial. With a rainy season ahead of us, electronics can easily slip, drip, and absorb unwanted moisture. ServiceMaster Metropolitan wants to provide its customers with some tips on keeping these electronics dry when they suffer water damage.

Here are some things you want to avoid doing when you first realize your phone or laptop is wet:

  • Frantically tap buttons
  • Blowing on the item
  • Blasting it with a hair dryer
  • Stick the device in the oven

If your phone is wet, here are some helpful steps to take:

  1. Retrieve the phone from the liquid immediately. The longer it’s in the toilet, Jacuzzi, or in the rain, the greater the water damage will be.
  2. Take out the battery. You don’t have to power the phone off, or hit any buttons. If you have an iPhone, cut off the power in the device as soon as possible.
  3. Give the device a quick wipe with a clean, dry towel. Try to ensure that no water drains into the openings or ports. If there are traces of water in cracks, you can use compressed air to blow it out.
  4. Stuff the phone into a bag of dry rice and let it site for 24-36 hours. To make sure that the rice doesn’t cause any damage to the phone, wrap the phone loosely in a paper towel before placing it in the rice.

Since a laptop has so many parts, you’ll want to bring serious water damage to a professional. Here are some steps you can take before bringing the laptop in:

  1. Turn off the computer, unplug it, and remove the battery immediately.
  2. Remove all components that are easily detachable such as the mouse, cables, flash drives, DVDS, etc.
  3. Dry the outside of the machine by holding it upside down then wiping away any wet areas with a dry, clean towel or lint-free absorbent fabric.
