Remove Charring | Smoke Damage Tips for West Milford, NJ Homeowners

June 30th, 2015 · No Comments

Any time you experience a fire in your home, it can be incredibly scary. For a major fire, you’ll need to call the fire department followed by a professional fire restoration company. In smaller cases of charring and soot coverage, there are ways to alleviate the damage before it permanently scars your walls, ceiling, and other surfaces. ServiceMaster Metropolitan provides fire restoration to homes throughout West Milford, NJ, and we’d like to take a few minutes to show you how you can reduce the affects of soot and charring easily.

Before you start cleaning up smoke damage, you’ll need to assess the extent of the damage. For example, it is easier to clean the soot off of walls painted with satin or semi-gloss finishes than those covered with a flat finish or primer. Remember, if the charring is extensive, call the professionals to properly restore the area.

Here are the items you’ll need to clean off smoke damage:

  • Two buckets
  • Heavy duty rubber cleaning gloves
  • Warm water
  • Goggles
  • Clean rags
  • One large sponge (the type you would use to wash a car)
  • Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) *

*Please Note that TSP is a harsh chemical cleaner that can cause severe skin or eye irritation. Wearing gloves and goggles is absolutely required when handling TSP.

Here are the steps for smoke damage cleaning:

  1. Fill the two buckets with one gallon of warm water each.
  2. Add 1 generous tablespoon of TSP to one of the buckets of water.
  3. While wearing the goggles and rubber gloves, wet the sponge with the TSP/water solution. Wipe the surface vigorously with the sponge.
  4. Rinse the area thoroughly with a rag dipped in the clean bucket of water. Make sure the entire area has been washed and rinsed.
  5. Repeat the wiping and rinsing process as needed. Be sure that you do not over saturate the surface with water. If water seeps into the walls and baseboards, it could cause water damage to the drywall.
  6. In case the soot and/or charring are not entirely removed, you may need to prime the surface and repaint.

We hope that these steps will help you in the event of charring or soot damage. If you do need professional fire restoration in West Milford, NJ, give ServiceMaster Metropolitan a call.
